AGAWAM—Glenmeadow will offer an education program on protecting the planet on Tuesday, November 19 from 10 a.m. to noon at Agawam Public Library, 750 Cooper St., Agawam.

“Environmental Responsibility: Taking Steps to Protect Our Planet” is the third and final program in the fall Glenmeadow Learning series, which provides free educational offerings in the community.

The presentation will be led by Terra Missildine, who will speak about how her mission to protect the Earth began and why it’s important for everyone to commit to doing so.

Missildine will also outline what individuals, organizations, and legislators can do to begin to bring about positive change and environmental healing. She will offer samples of earth-friendly products.

Missildine has had a lifelong passion for sustainability. While in an early iteration of a sustainable living program at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in 2005, she founded Beloved Earth, the first eco-friendly cleaning company in Western Massachusetts.

Since then, the business has blossomed to support 18 team members and still operates by cooperative principles and the values of the triple bottom line: people, planet, and profit. Missildine also helps to support her sustainability and that of her family through running a small suburban homestead, where they grow a fair amount of their own organic food.

Environmental Responsibility is free, but space is limited, and reservations are required. To register, contact Jazlyn Wanzo at jwanzo@glenmeadow.org. For more information, or to register online, visit glenmeadow.org/events.

Glenmeadow Learning is one of many free programs Glenmeadow offers to members of the wider community. It represents only one facet of the life plan community’s mission to serve seniors across the region and to operate as a socially accountable organization.

Established in 1884, Glenmeadow is a nonprofit, accredited life plan community; it provides independent and assisted living at its campus at 24 Tabor Crossing in Longmeadow and expanded Glenmeadow at Home services throughout greater Springfield.

To learn more about Glenmeadow and its history and offerings, visit www.glenmeadow.org.

About Glenmeadow

In the 1800s, elderly individuals without family or means were sent to live at what was called “the poor farm.” In 1884, a group of civic leaders raised funds among themselves and other area families and purchased a house on Main Street in Springfield’s south end, establishing The Springfield Home for Aged Women. Quickly outgrowing that house, land was purchased on the corner of Chestnut and Carew streets, where a new home was constructed and opened in 1900. In 1960, the name was changed to Chestnut Knoll, and, in 1992, it began to admit men.

In 1993, the organization purchased a 23-acre parcel in Longmeadow to build a new community that would provide both independent living and assisted living in one building with various common areas. This was a new concept known as a continuing care retirement community. Existing residents from the old Chestnut Knoll property were moved to the new campus in 1997. Shortly after the move, the board voted to change its legal name to Glenmeadow to coincide with the name being used by the developer of the property.

Continuing care retirement communities are now referred to as life plan communities, responding to the needs of the aging population with new opportunities for care, plus creative, educational and personal exploration. Glenmeadow offerings, which include everything from senior living options and handyman services to personal care and travel programs, are provided at its Longmeadow campus and across the region through Glenmeadow at Home. Glenmeadow strives to fulfill its mission of nurturing the whole person in mind, body, and spirit.

Three area professionals to lead a hands-on workshop

WEST SPRINGFIELD—Glenmeadow will offer a presentation on technology and the many ways it can be used for entertainment on Thursday, October 17 from 10 a.m. to noon at the West Springfield Public Library, 200 Park St., West Springfield.

“Get Tech-Savvy: An IT Primer for Older Adults” is the second program in the fall Glenmeadow Learning series, which provides free educational offerings in the community. In this workshop, participants will learn how to use apps—or software applications—on computers, tablets, or telephones to connect with friends and loved ones who are far away or to play games or get a ride.

The presentation will be led by Derek Allard, owner of Tunnel 7, which offers digital design and marketing services; Ryan Askew, owner of Ryan Askew Web Design & Development; and Patrick Lostaglia, Glenmeadow’s network administrator.

Today’s technology makes it possible for us to connect with people through our computers, tablets, and telephones. Allard, Askew, and Lostaglia will offer an overview of how these tools work; participants will then break into small groups for a demonstration of programs that can be used for various purposes.

Participants must bring a smart phone, laptop, or tablet.

Allard has been designing and building websites since the late 1990s. His work has appeared in design books, but he gets most excited when designs help improve the overall business for his clients. He speaks regularly on many digital topics and when not working can be found hiking in the White Mountains where he is trying to summit all 48 4,000-foot peaks before he turns 50.

Askew brings 10 years of front-end web design and development experience, a varied list of local and nationwide clients, and a wide range of projects.

Lostaglia has been with Glenmeadow since 2016, serving the organization as the network administrator. Lostaglia has more than 30 years of computer experience, and holds over 150 computer and IT-related certifications.

Get Tech-Savvy is free, but space is limited, and reservations are required.
I help Glenmeadow, a life plan community in Longmeadow, plan educational programs, which I then also promote. In September, the first program was held in West Springfield. Called “Both Sides of the Aisle: A conversation about America’s two-party system,” it drew a crowd of roughly 50 people. The following is the blog I wrote about it.

Nearly a third of the people gathered for Glenmeadow’s first fall Glenmeadow Learning presentation, “Both Sides of the Aisle: A conversation about America’s two-party system,” raised a hand to indicate they had at least one friend with whom they can no longer discuss politics.

To panelist Ron Chimelis, an editorial writer for the Springfield Republican, that told the full story about the division in the United States between Democrats and Republicans.

What participants learned, though, is that that dissension goes back to the framing of the United States Constitution. “While today’s political climate feels increasingly uncivil, there is nothing wrong with ideological division between the parties, which gives voters clear alternatives,” said panelist Samuel VanSant Stoddard, assistant professor of political science at College of Holy Cross.

Led by moderator Rob Genest, op-ed editor for the Springfield Republican, discussion points during the talk organized by Glenmeadow, a life plan community in Longmeadow, Massachusetts, included a look at the two-party system in the context of the United States Constitution; how the two-party system has worked over time; dissent between the parties; contributors to the divide, such as special interest groups, media, and social media; state and local politics; and whether Trump exacerbated the division we see today.

In addition to Chimelis and Stoddard panelists were Matt Szafranski, the editor/founder of Western Mass Politics and Insight; Donald Robinson, professor emeritus of government at Smith College; and Brooke Hauser, editor of the Daily Hampshire Gazette in Northampton.

Taking audience members back to the roots of our system, Robinson said the framers of the Constitution themselves had opposing views in 1787. “There was polarization,” he said. “Controversy was as ferocious in those days. We didn’t invent that.”

President George Washington warned the country’s leaders about the dangers of political parties, Robinson said, adding, “He said they are the bane of the existence of republics like ours, and he was strongly opposed to their use.”

Younger framers of the Constitution were involved in creating the first parties.

Stoddard said the parties were not always Democrat and Republican; they grew out of party organizations that shifted and grew stronger over time. “The parties have shifted dramatically since they came about and also the populations they serve,” he said. Pointing to increasing Democratic strength in the South and Republican strength in the Midwest, Stoddard added, “The Democrats were the party of the South, and the Republicans were the party of the North. That has largely flipped, and I see we are going to flip again.”

Szafranski said emerging political organizations need 3 percent of the vote to be considered a major party. In Massachusetts, the Green Party is the only third party that holds that distinction. “A Green Party candidate could conceivably win,” he said.

Hauser, Chimelis, and Genest said the country’s political dissension at times exacerbates negative conversations between newspapers’ editorial staffs and readers. Hauser said she must be careful about words that are used—and how they are used. For instance, social justice buzzwords can turn some readers off before they have a chance to consider the content of the whole article.

“We make sure we are being fair and that there is balance,” she said. “We get into arguments, editing. It’s a constant dialogue that I find interesting.”

Hauser added, “The highest compliment I can receive is, ‘I read your article from beginning to end.’”

Rob Genest, op-ed editor for the Springfield Republican, to moderate

WEST SPRINGFIELD—Glenmeadow will offer a panel presentation on America’s two-party system on Wednesday, September 4 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Storrowton Carriage House, 1305 Memorial Avenue, West Springfield.

“Both Sides of the Aisle: A conversation about America’s two-party system” is the first program in the fall Glenmeadow Learning series, which provides free educational offerings in the community.

The panel will be led by Rob Genest, op-ed editor for the Springfield Republican, who will serve as moderator.

Panelists will be Donald Robinson, professor emeritus of government at Smith College; Samuel VanSant Stoddard, assistant professor of political science at College of Holy Cross; Ron Chimelis, op-ed writer for the Republican; Matt Szafranski, editor/founder of Western Mass Politics & Insight; and Brooke Hauser, editor of the Daily Hampshire Gazette in Northampton.

These academic and journalistic leaders will discuss that the American political system has always been dominated by two parties, but rarely have our politics felt so contentious. Americans are increasingly divided by their loyalties, and a growing number seem to identify as neither Democrats nor Republicans.

In the face of daily scandals and policy gridlock in Washington, our panelists will look at what the future holds, and they’ll discuss the dynamics of our political system and the path forward.

Moderator Genest graduated from Westfield State College and has worked as an editor and section chief for the European edition of the Wall Street Journal, based in Brussels.
Robinson holds degrees from Yale, Union Theological Seminary in New York City, and Cornell. His academic research and teaching focus on American political and constitutional development. He has edited and authored numerous books, and in the mid-1980s, he was an advisor and panelist on Fred Friendly’s PBS series “The Constitution: That Delicate Balance.”

VanSant Stoddard is visiting assistant professor of political science at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester. He has conducted research on the functions and influences of state political parties for the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC. His most recent work investigates the relationships between Americans’ political identities and rates of voter turnout.

Chimelis has been writing at the Springfield Newspapers since 1984. Prior to that, he worked at the Chicopee Herald, which he owned for a time, and was a news talk show host and sports broadcaster at WREB Radio in Holyoke. Chimelis has won roughly 30 writing awards, including a national honor in 2012.

Szafranski is the editor-in-chief and founder of Western Mass Politics & Insight, an attorney and a writer. A graduate of Boston University and the University of Connecticut School of Law, he has been active in local and state politics for over 10 years. Szafranski’s work has appeared in The Daily Free Press and Blue Mass Group. He regularly contributes on-air commentary to New England Public Radio, WGBY, and Focus Springfield.

Hauser is editor-in-chief of the Daily Hampshire Gazette. She is also the author of two books, most recently Enter Helen: The Invention of Helen Gurley Brown and the Rise of the Modern Single Woman, a biography of the iconic Cosmopolitan editor. Her first book, The New Kids: Big Dreams and Brave Journeys at a High School for Immigrant Teens, won the American Library Association’s 2012 Alex Award. A longtime journalist, she has written for The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Marie Claire, and Allure.

It represents only one facet of the life plan community’s mission to serve seniors across the region and to operate as a socially accountable organization.Established in 1884, Glenmeadow is a nonprofit, accredited life plan community; it provides independent and assisted living at its campus at 24 Tabor Crossing in Longmeadow and expanded Glenmeadow at Home services throughout greater Springfield.

Moderator: Rob Genest, op-ed editor, the Springfield Republican. Panelists: Donald
Robinson, Professor Emeritus of Government, Smith College; Samuel VanSant Stoddard,
Assistant Professor of Political Science, College of the Holy Cross; Ron Chimelis, op-ed writer, the Republican; and Matt Szafranski, editor/founder, Western Mass Politics & Insight.

An IT Primer for Older Adults
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 17 10 a.m.–noon
West Springfield Public Library, 200 Park Street, West Springfield

Today’s technology makes it possible for us to connect with friends and loved ones who are far away through apps on our computers, tablets, and even our telephones. Several Western Mass IT professionals will offer an overview of how these tools work. Participants will then break into groups for a demonstration of programs that can find you a ride, allow you to video chat with family, or play games. Please bring a smart phone, laptop, or tablet.

Our leaders will include: Derek Allard, owner of Tunnel 7, which offers digital design and marketing services; and Patrick Lostaglia, Glenmeadow’s network administrator.

Environmental Responsibility:
Taking Steps to Protect Our Planet
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 19 10 a.m. –noon
Agawam Public Library, 750 Cooper Street, Agawam

Tornadoes, fires, hurricanes, floods— all signs that our planet is in revolt. She will also outline what individuals, organizations, and legislators can do to begin to bring about positive change and environmental healing. Terra will offer samples of earth-friendly products.

While in an early iteration of a sustainable living program at UMass Amherst, Terra Missildine founded the first eco-friendly cleaning company in Western Mass. She also supports sustainability by growing organic food to feed her family of three.

LONGMEADOW—Glenmeadow Learning will offer a trivia challenge for older adults on Wednesday, November 28 from 10 a.m. to noon at Western New England University. It is the fourth and final program in Glenmeadow’s fall event series, which provides free educational programming in the community.

Test of Wits: A Trivia Challenge for Older Adults will be offered in Sleith Hall / Wood Auditorium at 1215 Wilbraham Road in Springfield.

Tony Cignoli, President of the A.L. Cignoli Company, will lead the event. He is a Springfield native with broad-scope knowledge of politics, government, international affairs, and local culture.

“Stimulating the mind is just as important for older adults as staying physically fit,” said Anne Thomas, president and CEO of Glenmeadow. “This fun challenge will quiz you on topics ranging from history, arts and culture, to wellness.”

The program is free, but space is limited, and reservations are required. To register, call Julie Jediny at 413.355.5972 or email jjediny@glenmeadow.org or register online at glenmeadow.org/events.

Glenmeadow Learning is one of many free programs Glenmeadow offers to members of the wider community. And these programs represent only one facet of the life plan community’s mission to serve seniors across the region and to operate as a socially accountable organization.

Glenmeadow strives to fulfill its mission of nurturing the whole person in mind, body and spirit.

LONGMEADOW—The first program in the Glenmeadow Learning series this fall is aimed at offering older adults the experience of enjoying a three-course meal while meeting peers.

The Family Table: Building Meaningful Relationships will be offered three times from noon to 2 p.m. at the life plan community at 24 Tabor Crossing on Friday, Sept. 14; Thursday, Oct. 4; and Tuesday, Nov. 6.

“Many older adults live on their own and miss the experience of meeting others or building longtime relationships through fellowship,” said Anne Thomas, Glenmeadow’s president and CEO. “We are providing them with a chance to meet others and have a wonderful meal.”

Participants will enjoy an appetizer, main course and dessert—on Glenmeadow—while making new connections with others in an intimate dining setting, complete with conversation on what community means to them, Thomas said.

Tablemates will include residents and staff members, who will prompt lively discussion on topics of interest to older adults.

The program is free, but space is limited, and reservations are required. To register, call Julie Jediny at 413.355.5972 or email jjediny@glenmeadow.org or register online at glenmeadow.org/events.

Individuals are encouraged to make reservations early as these events are limited to five participants.

Glenmeadow Learning is one of many free programs Glenmeadow offers to members of the wider community. And these programs represent only one facet of the life plan community’s mission to serve seniors across the region and to operate as a socially accountable organization.

Established in 1884, Glenmeadow is a nonprofit, accredited life plan community; it provides independent and assisted living at its campus at 24 Tabor Crossing in Longmeadow and expanded Glenmeadow at Home services throughout greater Springfield.

Glenmeadow strives to fulfill its mission of nurturing the whole person in mind, body and spirit.
