SOUTH HADLEY—Susan Carson, the owner of Carson’s Bed & Breakfast and Salon, announced recently that she has become a member of a national organization that allows her to recycle waste from her salon.

By joining Green Circle Salons in December 2017, Carson said she is now able to recycle such materials as hair, soiled color foils and tubes, aerosols, gloves, excess hair color and lightener, wax strips and nail polish bottles.

“It keeps me excited about being in the salon industry because we have a lot of waste,” Carson said. “I’m able to contribute to saving the environment, rather than take away from it. And my guests get to be a part of that, too. I’m really excited that I can offer people that opportunity.”

Carson, who operates her business at 96 College St., said her salon waste is now repurposed into entirely new goods. For example, through Green Circle Salons, recycled hair is repurposed in booms—long strips of mesh filled with compacted hair that are used to clean up oil spills in bodies of water or on land.

Green Circle Salons is based in Toronto, Canada, and has pioneered sustainable solutions for recycling and repurposing 95 percent of salon and spa waste since 2009 and has over 1,500 member salons across the United States and Canada.

Carson first learned about green salon practices a few years ago while taking a “Greening Spas” class at the University of California, where she earned certifications in spa and hospitality management. She began to use a line of organic hair products called Eufora, and at a Eufora training, learned about Green Circle Salons.

Carson first opened her salon—formerly known as Ninety Six the Salon—in 2015. She added the bed and breakfast, and changed the business name, in May 2017. Located close to Mount Holyoke College, Carson’s Bed & Breakfast and Salon serves locals, those affiliated with the college and out-of-town visitors.

Carson specializes in rest and relaxation, offering spa services, hair styling, facials and reiki treatments in her 200-year-old home.

“It’s lovely to have those treatments, and then go back to your room and rest,” she said. “I am excited every time I provide a client with a sense of well-being and renewal through a new cut, a great facial or by providing comfortable, cozy accommodations to lodgers who want to disconnect for a bit.”

Carson said she believes her business is the only one in Massachusetts to combine a bed and breakfast with a salon.

SOUTH HADLEY—Stephen R. Duval, a private wealth advisor with Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc., recently announced he has moved his practice to a new location at 551 Newton St. and changed its name to the Summit House Wealth Partners. Duval has also expanded his team of financial advisors by one.

A Certified Financial Planner^®, Duval moved his office in June from 130 College St., and colleague Justin Osowiecki, a financial advisor, made the transition with him. At the same time, Duval partnered with Edward Boscher, who is also now serving clients as a Summit House Wealth Partners financial advisor.

The team will hold an open house for the public at the new Newton Street office on Thursday, Sept. 21 from 2-7 p.m.

Duval holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts in business administration and is a graduate of the College for Financial Planning. He has been with Ameriprise for 25 years. A native of South Hadley, he lives in Northampton with his wife, Kimberly, and he is very active as a fundraiser for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Boscher also is a Certified Financial Planner^® and a Certified Investment Management Analyst^®. He has spent much of his career working with Voya Investment Management out of its Windsor, Conn., office. Boscher holds a bachelor’s degree in business management from Westfield State University. He lives in Belchertown and sits on the Belchertown Finance Committee.

Boscher made the transition to Summit House Wealth Partners “to put my 23-plus years of asset management experience to work for people around here, because I live here,” he said.
